This is a gentle reminder that, February 6 each year, is celebrated as the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation. It is a UN-sponsored awareness day that informs the world about FGM/C and promotes its eradication.
On February 6, 2003, the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Stella Obasanjo, made the official declaration on “Zero Tolerance to FGM” in Africa during a conference organized by the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (IAC) from Feb 4 to 6, 2003 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In her statement, she praised the work that had been done since the 1930s but highlighted the need to intensify efforts. Subsequently, the Then the UN Sub-Commission on Human Rights adopted the 6th of February as the “International Day of Zero Tolerance to FGM and it was officially commemorated on Feb. 6, 2003. Promoting the Zero Tolerance Day on all endcuttinggirls platforms
Organising media dialogues in Imo and Ebonyi States
Awareness creation by the 10 Radio Stations partnering with UNICEF to produce and air the FGM/C Radio Drama Serials (Pim Pim Pim) through Live phone-in programmes, News Commentary, News Talk, Payoff at the end of every news bulletin, etc). For example, Heartland FM 100.5 “pay off for February 2017” at the end of every bulletin will be “Stop FGM/C; it is a violation of the rights of the woman and girl-child”. In Oyo State, Mr. Seun Onifade, will feature on a Radio Programme (Premier FM 93.5). This programme was arranged by a partner Radio Stations (Amuludun FM).
